Electric Commuting in a Practical Package
The 2025 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid takes the standard Escape Hybrid and adds meaningful electric-only capability. After a week of testing, we found it can handle many daily commutes on electricity alone while providing the flexibility of a hybrid for longer trips.
Performance & Efficiency
The Escape PHEV uses the same 2.5-liter/electric motor combination as the standard hybrid but adds a larger 14.4 kWh battery for 37 miles of electric-only range. Combined output is 221 horsepower, slightly more than the standard hybrid.
In electric mode, the Escape PHEV is smooth and quiet. Acceleration is adequate for merging and passing. When the battery is depleted, it operates as a conventional hybrid with excellent fuel economy around 40 mpg.
Interior Quality & Space
The Escape PHEV interior matches the standard Escape with its functional, well-organized layout. The SYNC 4 infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen is responsive and includes wireless smartphone integration.
The larger battery doesn’t compromise interior or cargo space significantly. Rear seat passengers enjoy good space, and cargo capacity remains competitive. Material quality is appropriate for the price point.
Safety & Technology
Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is available with intelligent adaptive cruise control featuring lane centering. The standard Co-Pilot360 includes pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist.
The parking assistance features make maneuvering easy. Active Park Assist 2.0 can handle parallel and perpendicular parking automatically. Good safety ratings from IIHS and NHTSA provide confidence.
Driving Experience
In EV mode, the Escape PHEV provides a smooth, quiet driving experience. The transition to hybrid mode is nearly imperceptible when more power is needed or the battery is depleted.
The ride quality is comfortable and composed. Steering is light and easy. While not sporty, the Escape PHEV handles predictably and provides a relaxed driving experience suited to commuting and family duty.
Verdict
Rating: 4.5/5
The 2025 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid offers meaningful electric capability in a practical package. With 37 miles of electric range, many owners can handle their daily driving on electricity while retaining hybrid flexibility for longer trips. It’s one of the best values in the PHEV segment.
